About This Event

Cherie Hill IrieDance presents, Détente, an Oakland premiere choreographed and performed by Cherie Hill with dancers Andreina Maldonado and Rose Rothfeder. Video by Imani Karpowich. August 22 & August 24, 8pm at the Temescal Arts Center, Oakland, CA. Tickets 10-20 Sliding Scale. No-one turned away for lack of funds. Détente investigates displacement, the words meaning, and impact. Through dance, video, and story, performers experiment with the act or process of displacing, and what it means to be removed from the usual or proper place; specifically: to expel or force to flee from home or homeland. The work is inspired by choreographer Cherie Hill's personal experience with gentrification in Oakland and is titled after an email her landlord sent months after battling to save her home. Dancers Cherie Hill, Andreina Maldonado, and Rose Rothfeder transform internalized experience into a physical expression using improvisational structures that play with ethereal senses of the body- finding and tracing invisible impressions, moving in and out of solo and group phrasing while dancing quickly through weaving pathways. Sections of the choreography explore complex emotions via an aesthetic mix of subtleness and defiance. The Oakland premiere includes a special film screening of the documentary, Alice Street, and a post-show discussion on gentrification and housing rights with Causa Justa: Just Cause. About the performers: Cherie Hill (choreographer & dancer) is a choreographer, dancer, teacher, and scholar, whose art explores human expression in collaboration with nature, music, and visual imagery. IrieDance, a fiscally sponsored project of Dancers Group works have shown at the Live Oak Theatre, Shotwell Studios, the African American Cultural Center, the Black Choreographer's Festival, Anschultz Theatre, Bao Bao Festival, P.L.A.C.E Performance, the San Francisco Cathedral, Omni Oakland Commons, SF Moving Arts Festival, Kinetech Arts, Alena Museum, SAFEhouse Arts, the
